Ysbyty Gwynedd

RLD have successfully tendered for many building projects for the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board including this alterations and refurbishment of the existing hospital and construction of a new Aseptic Suite within an existing courtyard. The works involved stripping  out  an existing Aseptic department, demolition of an existing plantroom, construction of a new two storey extension, design and fit out of a new  aseptic  suite,  refurbishment  of  existing offices,  toilets, hospital wards, associated rooms and the hospital radio studio.  These demolitions, alterations and refurbishments to the existing hospital   were   all   carried   out   in   a   fully operational environment, with the hospital wards full to capacity with patients and staff.  The  new two storey Aseptic extension was built in an existing enclosed courtyard which was located centrally within the hospital buildings.  The technical logistics due to its locality and complexity of the new construction works was very demanding  and to overcome some of these difficulties we used our own tower crane to lift all fabrication materials, including a new steel framework, concrete floor beams, external roof and wall cladding over an existing 4 storey hospital ward.. Whilst the refurbishment of the existing offices and wards were in- keeping with the hospitals long term modernisation program, the fit out of the Aseptic suite was very unique. We employed a specialist cleanroom company to design, build and install a facility to the clients specific requirements. This company has implemented an aseptic manufacturing unit incorporating radio pharmacy  and dispensing suite.  The  scheme  provides the hospital with in-house pharmacy manufacturing, enabling quick turn round of special medicines for patents receiving treatment at the hospital. The suite consists of sterile clean rooms fed by specialist ventilation systems to remove airborne particulates creating a near particulate free area for the safe manufacture of pharmaceuticals.  A challenging project like this shows that with advanced planning and coordination within our own company, excellent communication with the client and a good liaison with our sub-contractors a project of this complexity can be successfully achieved.
